The Best Games Of The 8th Generation 10 – 6
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Horizon: Zero Dawn does a lot of things right: from world building to progression, it feels like the developers behind the Killzone series have finally reached maturity when it comes to crafting an engrossing experience. Aloy’s journey and world offer a unique twist on a genre and it’s a universe that’s easy to spends hours in gazing on its wonders.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
After the bonkers Resident Evil 6, no one really expected anything from the Resident Evil franchise but that was before Resident Evil 7: Biohazard take things back from the ludicrous over-the-top action game back into the survival horror with an emphasis on the atmospheric horror; this is one of the best entries of the series and most of it can be experienced in VR on PlayStation.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
The outstanding farewell to Solid Snake and Kojima’s magnum opus is an amazingly deep game. I do think Kojima is overrated as a creator but it’s hard to deny how much love has been poured in the final chapter of Solid Snake’s story. Anyone who wants to understand why this franchise has so many fans should give it a try.
Control
After the forgettable Quantum Break, everyone was awaiting the new outing from the Alan Wake developers; Remedy didn’t disappointed with a fantastical mind-bending metroid-vania third person shooter that built on the foundations of Quantum Break but adjusted its gameplay to make the mechanics that set the title apart shine.
NieR: Automata
Yoko Taro has really created something special here; everything about this game is pure poetry; it’s one of the most beautifully empathic and philosophical journey in the last generation and its themes and multiple endings will resonate with the people who’ve experienced them. Very few games can transcend themselves to become more than what they are; NieR: Automata is Art.
Hidden Gems You Shouldn’t Have Missed
Sayonara Wild Hearts
This sonic tale of broken hearts and depression is visually striking and such a unique mix part electro-pop music album and part love letter to old school video games. The first time I heard the visuals with the music I knew I would love this game. It’s so different than what you’d expect from a video game yet it’s the only medium such a piece like this could exist. It’s a beautiful journey for anyone willing to experience it.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
This is the kind of indie game I love; it doesn’t try to be something it’s not and it plays on its strengths to deliver a remarkably fun and memorable game where the colorful visuals are unmistakable. The sequel from Ori and the Blind Forest improves on its predecessor in every single way while keeping its charm and personality.
Until Dawn
This a game that peaked my attention and surpassed all my expectations; it’s a fantastic thrill ride; the interactive horror movie I didn’t I want and that I’ll keep sharing how good of a time it is. It’s unlike most video games in its limited gameplay but at the same time, every choice matters and that makes it so much better than it has any right to be.
Titanfall 2
From being launched the week after Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to the lack of promotion, many people who were the target demo just skipped it… and yet Titanfall 2 has one of the best campaigns for a first-person shooter and tells one of the best stories featuring time travel since Chrono Trigger. It’s such a great game that can be found at the dollar store for dirt cheap.
No Man’s Sky
The greatest video game redemption story of all time! Following the backlash following its release, the devs of No Man’s Sky have relentlessly worked months after months to update the game which is now exceeding every promise made pre-launch; it’s an absolutely gigantic play space and seemingly taking off from a planet to fly through space and go to another corner of the galaxy is still awe-inspiring.
The Best Games Of The 8th Generation 5 – 1
The Outer Worlds
The legendary developers Obisidian delivered a unicorn here: a new IP similar to Fallout in humor and themes but set in space with the hallmark of their RPG, choices that are never black and white and that always carry both positive and negative consequences.
Persona 5
The sixth installment in the Persona 5 series does not disappoint! Not only the role-playing game focused on the dual lives of Japanese high school students has a visual flair that instantly makes it stand out from the crowd but it’s also one of the greatest games in its genre.
Red Dead Redemption 2
It’s difficult to find flaws to Rockstar San Diego’s masterpiece. The highly awaited sequel from Red Dead Redemption offers a one of the most expansive open world sandbox for players. On top of one of the finest storytelling that is a staple from the Grand Theft Auto developers, the multiplayer is on par with the best multiplayer-only offerings out there.
Spider-Man
The best superhero game period! Most videogames based on famous superhero are mediocre cash grabs; this is the opposite; everything is polished in this game and this New York City feels lived in. In this Spider-Man, Peter Parker is as important if not more than his alter ego; he’s the one driving the narrative and there are a lot of activities an unlocks to complete.
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
When the Witcher 3 came out, not many console players were familiar with its previous opus but the ones who did were raving about it. This is the game that made the Witcher a household name; and for many, live actors will never live up to their video game characters’ counterparts.
My Favorite Games
Destiny 2
I’m a big fan of Bungie’s games; they have a way to make shooting fun and rewarding that very few games as a service can; I love the Destiny lore and this is a fantastic sequel on all levels.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
My favorite Assassin’s Creed game since Black Flag; the game world is huge and you can spend countless hours on a single Greek island then remember about all the things left to explore; I’ve sunk so many hours in it yet I still want to go back to this world.
Detroit: Become Human
Quantic Dreams and David Cage know how to make the worst gameplay mechanics, QTE, a compelling act. Detroit is an emotional roller coaster and a unique journey that I still often think about.
Fallout 4
Not as good as New Vegas but still better than Fallout 76, this is a solid outing for my favorite franchise. I’ve sunk so many hours in the Commonwealth and enjoyed my time in it so much that this is definitely one of my favorite games here.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Over 20 years in the making and sky high expectations didn’t stop the remake from the mythical Final Fantasy VII to live up to the original; if this game is only the first chapter of its namesake, it still is an amazing game which still captures what made me us fall in love with the original and what made it so important to many of us.
