Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
One of the most underappreciated sequels of all time; I love what they tried to do with it… and I love that it’s not a found footage movie; I hated the first Blair Witch movie, I thought it was boring and it wasn’t real so what’s the point; the viral marketing failed before the movie was released. I really like this sequel so much better.
Evil Dead
If this movie had a different name, it would be loved by many. Personally I think it’s a much better movie than the original Evil Dead; it doesn’t have the charm of the original but it’s not a remake or a reboot; it’s its own story which unfortunately was judged on its name instead of its qualities.
Parents Worst Nightmares
Horror movies centered around children whether they are the ones to save or the protagonists are always super creepy.
The Ring
Probably one of the best American adaptations of a foreign film; The Ring stays true to its Japanese original while fixing some of the happenstances that culturally work in the country of the rising sun but would feel clunky in a Western script. Gore Verbinski’s direction elevates the film and makes it surpass the original.
Child’s Play
Now this is how you do a reboot! All the elements that made the original a classic are there and all the little things that dated the film have been modernized. One of my favorite guilty pleasures.
They Walk Among Us
Nothing is scarier than the people in your life not being who they appear to be; when monsters are literally living among us; things can get hairy.
The Faculty
This is my graduation movie. It came out when I graduated high school and it is so 90s that whenever I feel nostalgic, I go back to it. What a fantastic take on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Doctor Sleep
When you’re making a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s Shining, you’re guaranteed to be judged and compared to it. Doctor Sleep is a good movie; better than it has any right to be but will always be dismissed for not being as masterful as its illustrious predecessor which is a shame.
Tales From The Bayou
I absolutely love movies about Voodoo, it still has the mysticism traditional monotheist faiths have lost.
The Skeleton Key
I got to see this movie at a free screening and I’m glad I did because I would probably skipped it. It’s a really great atmospheric tale; you can feel the humidity of the Louisiana and engulf in the soul music. A definite must watch.
Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh
I absolutely love Candyman and more than the movies, I love the legend of it; this is why I prefer this unsung movie which reconcile the origin story of the hooked-man with his present status as a terror icon. The relocation from Chicago’s Cabrini-Green to New Orleans made this my favorite in the series.
Coitus Interruptus
Horror movies are often centered around teenagers and the passage to adulthood; sexuality is front and center and anything linked to it can truly become terrifying.
Teeth
Teeth is what I love about scary stories; it’s some kind of cautionary tale but as these kinds of stories about sexuality are usually meant for children; they are neither as explicit nor as raw as this one.
It Follows
After watching It Follow, I wondered how come there hasn’t been more horror movies using sexually transmitted diseases as plot devices. It’s definitely one of my favorite scary movies of the last decade.
The French Dark Corner
Paris is such a stunningly beautiful backdrop for movies that when used as a setting for a horror movie, the change can be jarring.
As Above, So Below
The French word macabre is perfect to embody the catacombs under the city of Paris; this is one of the very few found footage movie that I actually like; it understands how to create suspense and terror with the environment as opposed to a few jump scares in the middle of boring filler as most of the genre is usually about.
The Night Eats The World
Probably the most fun I had watching a zombie movie since Shaun of the Dead; this isn’t a comedy; this is a zombie movie done right. Placing it in a cosmopolitan metropolis while limiting its scope helps the movie tremendously in keeping its focus.
