Our Absolutely Stunning Trip To Fraser Island

A Quick Overview

It is a heritage-listed island located along the south-eastern coast of Queensland. Instead of going South of Brisbane to Coolangatta, we headed North towards Hervey Bay and took the ferry to the island.

Its length is about 120 kilometres and its width is approximately 24 kilometres. It is the largest sand island in the world.

Kingfisher Bay Resort

It’s been voted the Best Beach Resort in Australia and has won several awards; it’s in the middle of nature and has its own mirror lakes and swimming pools.

We stayed in one of the villas so we had our own kitchen and living room as well as a hot tub on the upper deck.

The Sights To Gaze Upon

75 Mile Beach

Apart from its length, there are many more impressive things about it: it’s where you’ll find the Maheno shipwreck, and the swimming spot known as Champagne Pools.

The SS Maheno

The SS Maheno, the most famous of the Fraser Island wrecks, was driven ashore just north of Happy Valley during a cyclone in 1935.

Champagne Pools

The Champagne Pools is a collection of recreational pools formed by volcanic rocks. It’s also the only place on Fraser Island where saltwater swimming is allowed.

Lake McKenzie

It is a ‘perched’ lake, which means it contains only rainwater, no groundwater, is not fed by streams and does not flow to the ocean. It is the most visited natural site on the island.

The sand here is pure, white silica and is not only beautiful to look at but feels beautifully soft to walk on.

Eli Creek

It’s a popular picnic and swimming spot, with a boardwalk that follows the creek inland. It pours up to four million litres of fresh water into the ocean every hour.

With the strong current you can swim or float from the bridge at the far end of the boardwalk; it seems like a fun experience.

Lake Wabby

It is both a window and a barrage lake. Window lakes form when the ground level falls below the water table. Barrage lakes form when a sand blow blocks the waters of a natural spring.

On one side its deep green waters are bordered by a giant sand dune that is slowly moving into the lake.

Wildlife

In The Water

It’s a place that has a rich wildlife from feral dingos on land to turtles, sharks, and humback whales in the water.

Kings Of The Beach

There a lot of wild dingos and it’s very common to see them eat dead turtles who came to lay eggs on the shore.

In The Trees

It’s also a hot spot for watching birds native to the island who can be heard everywhere on the island.
