The life cycle of the PlayStation 2 was over 13 years; one of the longest run in gaming which is one of the reasons why the number of games available on the system is so massive. Among them stand of the greatest franchises in gaming and some of the most acclaimed games.
Rockstar changed the world with the release of Grand Theft Auto III, and when it comes to supporting the PlayStation 2, a lot of systems have been sold because of games released by the controversial publisher; still to this day, Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories remain exclusive to Sony’s console.
When it comes to RPG and especially Japanese Role Playing Games, the PlayStation 2 followed the footsteps of its predecessor and is home to an incredibly vast amount of the finest games in the genre.
There are a lot of games that didn’t get the success they deserved because they were drowned in a sea of amazing titles but the best of them have achieved cult status by the few who got to play them.
If the PlayStation 2 has seen the downfall of fighting games as one of the dominant genres, it still has a varied and quality lineup when it comes to fighting with some of the most popular franchises having several entries on the system.
One of the best thing about the PlayStation 2 is the release of many compilations of older titles that were hard to find or where on obsolete systems; it was a tremendous boost to retrogaming.
Towards the end of its life cycle, there were many compilations of games coming out and it was very easy and affordable to build a library featuring some of the best games and franchises of the era.
